Women Are a Pain March 15, 2012
There’s a beautiful mall near my place, made more so by the presence of an all-woman staff in its parking lot. It warms the cockles of my heart to see so many women, smartly attired in uniforms of trousers, shirt and cap, manage an entire parking lot so efficiently. There are women security guards at the entrance of all the stores, women store attendants and women ushers in the movie theatre. What really moved me, however, was seeing women servers in restaurants, smartly attired females who took service orders and served as professionally as their male counterparts. (more…)
My Favourite Book March 6, 2012
On the first day of school, when I was in class five, I received a big shock. I picked up all my textbooks and notebooks from the school bookstore, and then, as I always did, I went to my bench and opened my books. And then followed the shock. Sister, Wife, Neta February 16, 2012
This time we have the remarkable distinction of having two women from my apartment building standing for the local elections. The only thing common between them is their gender. One candidate is single, a grassroots activist and a go-getter. The other is a WIFE. That’s all I know about her. Let’s call the former GA (grassroots activist) and the latter OW (only wife). (more…)
Gita as Philosophy January 28, 2012
Many Hindus believe Gita to be a philosophy text. Since I’m not a Hindu, I don’t believe it. (more…)
Reading Satanic Verses January 24, 2012
I thought I was one of ten people in India who had read Satanic Verses. I can now add another four people to that list, the four who read sections from it at the JLF. Though that doesn’t prove that they’ve read the entire book. I doubt they have since on the whole the book is unreadable. (more…)
