Reading Satanic Verses January 24, 2012

I thought I was one of ten people in India who had read Satanic Verses. I can now add another four people to that list, the four who read sections from it at the JLF. Though that doesn’t prove that they’ve read the entire book. I doubt they have since on the whole the book is unreadable. (more…)

One of the biggest canards that we Indians are fond of believing is that we are a tolerant and non-violent people. All school annual day chief guests repeat the myth of our tolerant past. Damn Family Values January 10, 2012

Religious heads, struggling politicians, demoralized grandmothers, all refer wistfully to something called ‘family values’. This umbrella term is another way of talking about everything that’s ‘good’ and ‘wholesome’ and ‘clean’. Actually, it’s a euphemism for the status quo ante, as it existed a hundred years ago. (more…)
